Dr Siddhant Kumar Prasad is an assistant professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Geoengineering at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Jais, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. He holds a doctoral degree (PhD) and a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (QS ranking – 30th by subject), Chennai, India. He holds a bachelor’s degree in the same discipline from Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.

His doctoral work in flow assurance area involves hydrate formation and dissociation kinetics and hydrate slurry rheology in a multiphase system involving oil and water. Dr. Siddhant has a broad research interest involving various areas such as Greenhouse house gas (GHG) mitigation, carbon dioxide sequestration and monitoring techniques, unconventional resources and exploration methods, gas hydrates, flow assurance and enhanced oil recovery. For his doctoral thesis, the research area was with flow assurance which involved investigating hydrate formation kinetics and rheology of hydrate slurry in a multiphase system involving oil and water. Since hydrate formation is an interfacial phenomenon (mass transfer through the oil water interface) and is affected by the crude oil composition, heavier crude oil fractions such as asphaltene have been characterized, and liquid hydrocarbons have also been included in the research. Rheological studies involved structure II hydrate formation (a common flow assurance issue).

He is currently involved in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) initiatives for reducing the carbon footprint. Due to increased development and energy consumption, the atmospheric CO2 concentration has been consistently growing. One way to reduce the atmospheric CO2 concentration is to sequester it into subsurface formations which can be depleted oil and gas reservoirs, saline aquifers, coal and shale plays, deep ocean water, gas hydrates, and basalt formation. Gas hydrate deposits are attractive as a huge carbon sink, not to mention the huge energy reserves that they hold. Utilizing even a fraction of India’s gas hydrate deposits to store CO2 and extract methane would certainly help fulfil India’s Energy Independence 2047 and Net-zero 2070 goals.
